Family Promise

Did you know that nearly 30% of the homeless population in Western New York is children?

St. Christopher Parish, made a decision to help homeless families in our region, and is a member of the Family Promise of Western New York Network. We are a Host Church site which means that one week every quarter, we host homeless families in our Church. Locally, there are 11 Host Congregations and over 30 support congregations which provide lodging, meals and a safe secure environment for families.

Family Promise is a truly unique organization. Their top priority is keeping the family together during their period of homelessness. Family Promise models its services on a national paradigm that brings together existing local community resources, especially faith congregations, to assist with their mission to serve homeless families. Family Promise offers an opportunity for volunteers of all faiths to reduce homelessness and transform lives. Over 500 volunteers assist, which helps keep operational expenses very low. This strategy enables Family Promise to help homeless families achieve lasting independence at a third of the cost of traditional shelters.

No one wants to be homeless. We think it only happens to other people, but the reality is that the people Family Promise serves are average American families who have fallen on hard times. It is the new face of homelessness, and is being seen more and more. For people living paycheck to paycheck, it doesn't take much to fall over the edge.

Shirley Joy and Kathy Brunner are our congregation's Family Promise Coordinators. Please contact Shirley at 693-6106, or Kathy at the Parish Office 692-2660, if you would like to volunteer. To find out more about Family Promise, visit
